The One Massive Advantage to a Bad Economy That You Hadn't Thought of (Yet)

My friend the interior designer, the one who comes round my house so I can help her build a business?

She’s working hard: building a site, writing pages, preparing for daily emails.

And, with some prodding from ye olde Stellar, she’s been stepping out and putting herself in front of people.

“Hey, I’m starting something new – my site will be live in the next week or so”.

Getting on Facebook, making calls… good lil’ soldier.

And obviously, all her friends are excited: “So good that you’re taking control, and building something for yourself!”

 

But the other day she showed up here, and her smile was all upside down.

“Martin, each time they say it’s a nice idea, they instantly tell me how much it sucks that the economy is so screwed up.

“And they’re right. Nobody has any money. How am I going to make a living with this?”

I smile at her: “It’s easy.

“Especially because all the other people think there’s no way it could work”.

She knots her brow.

“Seriously. Each time someone believes that it’s no use, that there’s no money, that people don’t spend…

“They’re not even going to try.

“They’ll just sit and watch some more TV, and get the news to confirm what they already believe.

“And that means there’s one person less you need to compete against.

“All those who drink the Kool-Aid, who tell themselves it’s better to just be on the dole – they sure as hell not starting anything.

“So the customers they *could* be getting, they are not being served.

“Which means you’ll be able to pick them up.

“Because you’re one of the few people who do put in the time, who build something for yourself, who take action.

“Honestly, don’t worry about it. You’ll do fine.

“Besides, you’ve got me to help you.

“Are you writing another email today?”

She clears up, smiles, and trundles off to her desk.

*Martin dusts hands*

 

It’s all down to mindset, folks.

If you think you can’t, you’re dead right.

But if you think you can, you just might be amazed at how right you are.
