That trick question yesterday, about the only one correct answer to ‘what stands in your way’?
The answer is ‘me’.
Which to most of us is a deadgiveaway, right?
We know that ultimately, it’s us and our limiting beliefs and unproductive habits that prevent us from reaching our goals.
We know that we need to take responsibility, ownership, fix things and change things – Yes Martin, we know.
Yeah but not so fast, Spidey.
Because even if you’re fully aware that the solution is in you, you still tell yourself stories about how some things are beyond your control.
I know I do, and I don’t think anyone in the world is free of it or ever will be.
Which is a good thing, because it means you’re on a path where you’ll never complete the mission:
To remove each and every obstacle that your subconscious puts in your way.
Once you get that, once you understand that no matter how totally ruthless you are in weeding out all false truths and stories you ought not to buy in to, there’s always another one…
That’s when you’ll really start to speed up.
That’s what happened to me.
I realised that there’s always something in me that wants to say ‘yes but’ or ‘it’s because’ or ‘I could if only’ or ‘but I don’t know how’.
And it lit a fire in me, kicked me into gear, turned me into a BS-hunting Sherlock Holmes.
I removed myself, got out of my own way – and everything changed.
And yes of course, I still tell myself stories – but these days, I’m exceedingly skeptical about believing them.
And you better believe it helps – it enables me to stop wasting time, stop being stuck, and get more results and return for my efforts.
Because I’m just that much less likely to talk myself into being powerless.
Did I do this on my own?
I have a coach who relentlessly mirrors back all the stories I tell myself.
I believe his favourite saying is: “You’re lucky I don’t buy into that story. If I did, you’d really be in trouble”.
If you’re fed up with being where you are, and you are ready to start telling yourself different stories, maybe I can help.
